Antique pieces are now a staple in interior design—just one or two finds can add a sense of history and personality to any space. But with a rise in popularity unfortunately comes a rise in prices, especially among those that are currently trending.
Several interior designers shared the hottest antiques right now, so you can scoop up some cool pieces before prices skyrocket. Keep an eye out for these at your local thrift store or flea market.
Chandeliers
High-quality chandeliers are timeless by nature, but when crafted from hand-blown glass by skilled artisans, they become especially beautiful, distinctive, and inherently valuable.
“Chandeliers are always a good investment, especially Murano glass chandeliers,” says Ruthie Staalsen of Ruthie Staalsen Interiors. “They can go in a traditional home or a more modern space to add a transitional feel.”
Ceramic Figurines
Playful ceramic figurines are becoming more highly sought after—especially as people continue to search for ways to make their homes feel lived-in and one-of-a-kind.
“’Grandma-core’ is on the rise, as is the hunt for whimsical decor,” says Molly Torres Portnof of DATE Interiors. Ceramic figurines, like this hand-painted Dolomite Staffordshire dog, fit that bill, she adds.
Monterey Furniture
A uniquely California style made in the late 1920s, Monterey furniture is known for its sturdy and reliable structure as well as its bold, saturated colors.
“Monterey is worth buying now because it remains relatively accessible, has a very recognizable look, and fits beautifully with the renewed interest in Spanish Revival and Western interiors across the Southwest,” says John Maloney McNamara of Coosa Interiors.
This furniture style definitely doesn’t lack personality, either. “Monterey also has something many collectible furniture categories lack: a sense of humor,” explains Maloney McNamara. “That said, it’s a style that rewards restraint. One piece, maybe two, feels charming and a little unexpected in a room; a full set starts to give dude ranch. Look for original painted surfaces and, especially, the wonderfully odd hand-painted scenes that give the furniture its personality. If there’s a donkey on a drawer front, I’m interested.”
Ornate Mirrors
It’s impossible to deny the charm of an ornate antique mirror. Perfectly imperfect, these vintage pieces bring character to any home. Plus, those crafted of certain metals will develop a one-of-a-kind patina (which designers say is the key to a lived-in space).
“Ornate gilt mirrors, like this Italian carved giltwood pier mirror,” says Portnof of what she’s buying. “These intricately detailed mirrors are charming, historical, and carry a sense of gravitas that makes any space feel grander.”
Rio Grande Blankets
If you’re into wall tapestries but are looking for something a bit warmer, Rio Grande blankets are about to have a moment.
“Rio Grande blankets have a wonderfully graphic look: stripes of natural wool, indigo, brick red, and other earthy colors, sometimes punctuated by diamonds, stars, and other geometric patterns,” says Maloney McNamara.
Each blanket is different from the next, with variations in color and pattern that come from being hand-made.
“The best early Rio Grande blankets are still relatively accessible, and now that designers have fully embraced textiles as wall art, I think these are the next to watch,” he adds. “Hang it over the sofa, fold it across the foot of a bed, or put it on the one wall everyone walks past. Then wait. I have a feeling the rest of the design world is about to catch up.”
Rattan Chairs
Pieces of furniture that evolve with you and your family for generations to come are always investment-worthy. For example, a rattan chair that looks one way now could completely transform after being reupholstered.
“Barrel rattan chairs, wood footstools, and settees that can be reupholstered in modern fabric without changing the wood itself,” says Staalsen. “Later, any family member can reupholster and make it theirs. Perfect for small spaces too.”
Antique Rugs
Texture, warmth, and personality are a few of the most important factors to consider when designing a space that feels authentic to you. An antique rug can offer all three.
“Antique rugs (professionally cleaned, of course) can be an amazing investment and add so much color and interest to a home,” says Staalsen.
