Designers Reveal Why Matching Bedding Sets Are Falling Out of Style

3 min read

If you’re looking for an easy way to upgrade your bedroom, you’ll want to read up on this design trend that experts are loving. The best part: It doesn’t require new paint, a furniture upgrade, or an expensive renovation. We tapped designers to explain the mismatched bedding trend that’s bringing personality back to the bedroom.

Most people don’t think twice about putting a matching set of sheets and pillowcases on the bed. But experts say using mismatched bedding can add a personalized, cozy look to your bedroom. You might use pillow shams from one set, a fitted sheet from another set, and a duvet cover from another. Designers also encourage adding pieces with interesting textures and patterns, like throw pillows or a vintage quilt at the foot of the bed.

The key to pulling off a look that’s charming and eclectic is finding pieces that coordinate without being matchy-matchy. Look for pieces with complementary colors or patterns that feel like they belong together, like gingham and florals.

Below, experts explain everything to know about the trend and offer tips for pulling it off in your bedroom. Head to your linen closet and start getting creative! (And if you find sets in there you don’t want anymore, read up on how to repurpose old sheets.)

The Trend, Explained

With homeowners leaning into more colorful design choices, it’s no surprise they’re choosing to have fun with bolder bedding, too.

Interior designer Heather French of French & French Interiors compares sheet sets to furniture sets: “We never source full furniture sets for our clients—so why would we choose bedding ‘sets’? Easy isn’t always better.”

Designers typically warn against overly coordinated sets of furniture. While one or two vintage pieces can bring character to a room, a full matching set can make it feel overdone. The same can be true for bedding.

“Mixing pieces adds character, depth, and a sense of individuality that makes a space truly your own. It’s an easy way to bring personality and visual interest to the room,” says French.

In other words, mismatched bedding is a low-stakes way to express your style without redesigning the whole space. Simply mix and match throws, pillow cases, sheets, and comforters for a look that is completely your own.

How to Achieve the Look

Luckily, this trend doesn’t lend itself well to hard rules. But if you don’t know where to start, here are a few pro-approved tips to create the mismatched look in your own bedroom.

✔️ Start small: “We often begin with a solid or subtly patterned duvet, then layer a quilt or blanket on top that ties in with the accent pillows. It’s a simple way to create a layered, intentional look,” says French.

✔️ Experiment with texture: Try a waffle duvet cover, silk pillowcase, and plush throw pillow—the possibilities are endless.

✔️ Pay attention to scale: “Combine smaller prints with medium or larger ones for balance. Consider what’s happening in the rest of the room so everything feels cohesive,” says French.

✔️ Don’t overthink it: “Have fun and be willing to experiment. If something feels off, switch it up. Shopping vintage for quilts and throws is a great way to add character without making the bed feel too busy,” says French.
