What’s more, studies have shown that cleaning may help manage stress, decrease your anxiety and even make you feel more accomplished.

    .

Even if you’ve deep cleaned your home a thousand times before, there are always new tips and better tricks to learn. With the help of Carolyn Forte, the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Home Care and Cleaning Lab Executive Director, who has been testing and reviewing cleaning products with the brand for over 40 years now, you can pick up the absolute best advice that will make your spring-cleaning experience easy, effective and dare we say it, enjoyable. JOIN GH+ NOWIn Good Housekeeping’s new Ultimate Cleaning Guide, available only to GH+ members, Carolyn shares her favorite cleaning supplies, techniques and exclusive secrets that she has tested over the years. Not sure what vacuum works best on your hardwood floors? Have a huge stain from an unfortunate red wine accident? Wondering how often you should be cleaning your electronics? Not even sure where to start? This exclusive digital guide has all the answers and more.To give you a preview of what to expect, here’s one of Carolyn’s top tips:How do I remove old stains from carpet?Reappearing stains happen when you’ve erased the stain from the surface of a carpet but failed to deal with the portion of the stain that’s trapped or hidden down below. So before you toss the evidence of that red wine-stained rug or cover up that coffee-stained corner, try these simple steps:Spritz a cloth with carpet cleaner, then work the carpet cleaner into the base of fibers — with your fingers if you need to — rinse well and blot.Fold a sheet of paper towel into quarters and place it on top of the area.Weigh it down with a heavy pot or vase and leave it overnight. Any leftover stain will be absorbed by the paper towel. When it’s dry, toss the dirty towel and fluff the tufts.

How to Decorate a Room with Color (While Keeping the Mood Simple and Calm)

This Post May Contain Affiliate Links. Please Read Our Disclosure Policy here

Do you like decorating with color? Or do you prefer neutrals? I appreciate so many types of rooms. I sense the beauty in rooms with primarily neutrals and a serene organic look…and I also feel so happy when I see rooms with fun little pops of color…as well as rooms bursting with color all over!
Perhaps you know you are a tried and true neutral fan, or a color-for-life fan. Or, maybe you’re like me and you love BOTH, so which one should you choose for your own home?
The good news? You don’t have to choose! In my own home, I love to include color, but still strive for an overall sense of calm. I sometimes have a little more fun with color in certain rooms, and then transition into a room with a calmer palette. I also give myself freedom to change things up with my whims!
There really are no rules, so if you love color but see your favorites on the “what not to do list” in any given year, or if someone says the style you love the most is going to be a passing trend, don’t worry!
Ultimately your style should be all about what YOU and your family love for your home.
If you are like me and want to add more color to your home while keeping the overall mood simple and calm…here are a few inspiration rooms along with my design observations and takeaway tips!

This room uses a lighter muted wall color with fun pops of color! Color was brought in through furniture with the sky blue painted armoire and fun orange painted chairs. Accents like a bouquet of cheery sunflowers, green and white patterned pillows and chair cushions, and an orange throw blanket wrap color around the room.
Using neutral elements as well like the eclectic mix of baskets and pottery bring in a natural calm feeling. Whitewashed wood floors keep the whole space light and airy. The connected room is a bright bold blue, but with white paneling below.

This space brings in spring green with the muted green and white patterned wallpaper, dried hydrangeas, a stack of springy beach towels, and landscape artwork. Simple off-white wall trim and wood floors keep the atmosphere calm. Natural texture was brought in with straw hats hanging on simple white peg hooks and the large woven basket! A tiny pop of extra color comes in with a blue ribbon on one of the hats. I love how that one simple touch pairs the color with the neutral texture. Adorable!

This cheery space uses white paneled walls with a bright turquoise painted wood floor. Colorful striped braided rugs, a cheery dresser painted a similar color as the floors, fun colorful rows of books, and a green and white patterned chair. Color was even subtly brought in on the white bedding with blue scalloped trim.

This kitchen has been a fave of mine for awhile now! I love the soft and muted blue/gray cabinets–they add a whisper of color while keeping a distinguished and serene tone. Another tip for adding color subtly in a room is to incorporate warm metals! Notice the brass wall sconces, copper pot and colander, brass hardware, and lanterns. Greenery and a beautiful pot of bright red flowers adds some cheer. Colorful patterns and accessories in the adjoining room make it an all around lively space that is still calm and comforting! LOVELY!

You can certainly bring in color with furniture, but for investment furniture pieces, choosing neutrals can be a wise choice for flexibility and longevity. A neutral sofa has always felt like a classic investment to me. My white slipcovered sofa and leather roll arm sofa (above) have stood the test of time, we’ve had them for years! They’ve allowed me to easily swap out pillows or rugs when I want to change up my look. A pop of cheerful color was added with a less expensive piece (that tufted ottoman!) and of course, the rug adds color and pattern.

If you want to just dip your toe into adding color, check out this kitchen. It’s primarily neutral, but they brought in the same repeated color through blue upholstered barstools, a blue painted island, and a blue accent backsplash behind the stove. There’s even a hint of blue in the pendant lights. You could certainly add more colors to this space if you wanted to, but repeating a few of the same color is a simple place to start!
A neutral backdrop can give you total flexibility to change up your accent colors throughout the seasons, too! You can see some of the paint colors we used in our craftsman home HERE, and more paint colors in our Seattle home HERE.

Percale vs. Sateen: What's the Difference and Which Is Better, According to Testers?

Shopping for the best sheets is tricky enough, but throw in technical terms like percale and sateen and it can make it that much harder to decipher which set is best for you. While these terms can be confusing, they’re actually pretty simple: They describe the weave of the fabric. While the fibers — which can range from cotton to linen to microfiber and more — let you know one aspect of the fabric, the construction is just as important to consider. The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab tests dozens of sheets each year, evaluating them for aspects like softness, durability, appearance and more. We put them through the wringer using our specialized lab equipment, then have consumer testers provide in-depth feedback during real-life use. We’ve tested hundreds of both percale and sateen sheets in the past five years to find the best options for every type of sleeper. Here’s how to decide which weave is right for you. What’s the difference between percale and sateen sheets?Percale sheets are light and crisp, while sateen sheets are silky smooth. The difference is due to how the yarns are woven. Even though they’re made with same materials — cotton or cotton blends — the structural differences result in very different textures and physical properties for each material.

Percale sheets have a basic one over, one under plain weave that allows for more interlacings — points where the threads overlap — making it one of the more durable fabrics used in bedding. This structure also provides percale’s signature light and crisp feel while offering the necessary breathability to maintain a comfortable body temperature. On the other hand, sateen sheets typically have a four over, one under satin-like weave that provides a smooth feel and nice sheen. Plus, it doesn’t tend to wrinkle as much as percale. Both types of sheets are available in a wide range of thread counts. While higher thread counts don’t usually translate to better quality sheets, we’ve found that sheets in the 300 to 500 range have a great balance of softness and durability. What is percale?Percale sheets are known for their crisp feel and lightweight quality and are often compared to button-down shirts, which typically have the same 1:1 weave. This classic sheet is also airy and breathable, making it a great option for hot sleepers or those who live in warmer climates. The downside to percale sheets is that they can feel rough or scratchy compared to sateen sheets and tend to wrinkle more because of their crisp, durable nature.Pros:Feels lightweight and crispBreathableDurableTake Note: Wrinkles more easilyCan feel roughBut while percale can often feel rough compared to sateen, L.L. Bean’s Pima Percale Sheet Set still earned high softness ratings with consumer testers, thanks to the premium Pima cotton, and excelled in durability testing in Lab. Testers also loved the breathability and raved about the cool-to-the-touch feel. If you’re on the search for an even softer percale sheet, ope for Parachute’s Brushed Cotton Sheet Set. It earned high marks for softness while maintaining a comfortable sleep temperature, making the brushed percale material a tester favorite. For a more durable fabric with a lived-in look, i.e. not wrinkle-free, choose the Gryphon Comfort Washed Sheet Set, which testers described as not too soft or thick. Or if you prefer something organic, Coyuchi’s Organic Percale Sheets have the same relaxed look with GOTS-certified organic cotton that one tester called “soft, luxurious and yet crisp and cool.”

What is sateen?Sateen sheets stand out for their smooth feel and slight sheen, with some fabrics having a slippery or silky texture. Sateen bedding is ideal for those who prefer softness over crispness. The fabric is also inherently more wrinkle-resistant compared to percale and some sateen sheets are even treated with a wrinkle-resistant finish for an iron-less, picture-perfect look. But keep in mind that sateen sheets can feel heavier or thicker than percale sheets, so they’re best suited for someone looking for a cozy, soft sheet, and don’t provide the same breathability afforded by percale. Pros: Silky and smooth feelSlight sheenDurableTends to wrinkle less than percale Cons:May feel too thick for some Not great for hot sleepersThe Brooklinen Luxe Core is one of the most popular sateen sheet sets available with quality fabric that’s both smooth and durable. Not to mention, the fitted sheet includes game-changer “short” side and “long” side labels for easy bed making. And if you want effortless, wrinkle-free sheets, take a look at Garnett Hill’s Wrinkle-Resistant Solid Sateen Bedding, which earned top marks for smoothness and wrinkle resistance in Lab without any ironing. For an even softer feel, The Company Store Legends Hotel Sheets earned some of the highest softness ratings across all other cotton sheets in our tests, with testers calling them “ultra-luxurious.” Or if you’re looking for organic sheets, opt for the Delilah Home Organic Cotton Bed Sheets. Not only are they GOTS-certified organic, soft and lightweight but they’re also under $200.

So which is better: Percale or Sateen? Our testers typically prefer the feel of sateen in side-by-side comparison tests, but ultimately it’s a matter of personal preference. Our evaluations show that while percale fabric is inherently stronger and sateen is inherently softer, both sheets perform well in Lab and at home with consumer testers. If you love a light, crisp sheet with good breathability and aren’t bothered by wrinkles, go with percale. If you prefer a soft, smooth sheet with a little more wrinkle resistance and thickness, go with sateen. Why trust Good Housekeeping?

This Designer's Airy Philadelphia Home is a Lesson in Creating Visual Interest with Neutrals

As the founder of the interior design firm, Sharp + Grey Interiors, Libby Rawes knew exactly how to refresh her family home in Philadelphia. Although some years passed since she, her husband and two kids moved from their smaller space in Denver, Colorado, Libby finally revamped her 1920s Foursquare house with more modern, comfortable and livable features. “The house is the perfect blend of feeling like you have separate spaces, but also open enough where things can flow,” she says.Libby designed the open floor plan with a play of cool and warm tones that maximize natural light and experimented with an assortment of textures for an inviting vibe. Living Room

Decorate with inspiring paintings. “I’m one of those people where if I find something I like, I’m drawn to it and just add it,” Libby says. This applied when designing her living room with artwork. The photograph on the left is from an artist in Colorado, while the painting on the right is an overhead view of Italy’s coast. “I grew up in Denver, so I think of Colorado as wide, open spaces, plains and prairies,” Libby says. “That picture [on the left] always brings me back to home.” Design Tip: When choosing the perfect painting, Libby suggests picking one that’s meaningful to you. “You don’t necessarily have to match your artwork to your space,” Libby says. “Something that feels at home within the space will give you that calming effect.”

Don’t be afraid to layer materials. Neutral colors and varied textures are hallmarks of Libby’s design style. The living room sofa features a velvety fabric; parts of the space boast cool leather accents; the rug has a subtle variation of texture; and the white table is crafted of wood and metal. “It’s all about mixing lots of different elements,” Libby says. “Texture can create a space that feels neutral without being flat.”DIY an accent wall.Libby’s husband, who is an electrician, helped transform their plain living room wall into an eye-catching focal point. They added box molding for texture and painted it with an eggshell sheen. “It has a little more light popping off of it and added what the room was lacking,” Libby says.Design Tip: “Anywhere you can, bring in some life,” Libby says. Greenery can add height, color and texture.

Design a modern and welcoming eating area.”This room was interesting, because the piano makes it a touch off-center,” Libby says. Although she doesn’t play, it was her mother’s and makes a beautiful addition to the dining room. “I wanted this to feel cozy when you’re having a nice dinner but also really clean because the house is open enough that you want the spaces to all flow,” she says.Add a statement light fixture.Libby chose her curvy glass pendant due to its subtle look. It complements the room’s homey feel and makes a gorgeous focal point upon walking in. “The light has this compact design and it’s pretty at night,” she says.Get the look: Devon Basket, anthropologie.com; Flynn Recycled Glass Pendant, potterybarn.com; Arden Upholstered Dining Armchair, worldmarket.com; Ebers Cream Cowhide Area Rug, allmodern.comBedroom

Embrace older architecture. When Libby and her family moved into their home, it was a traditional house with a Victorian feel — full of heavy colors and antiques. Instead of changing the classic look altogether, Libby decided to incorporate modern elements into her bedroom’s design scheme. She paired her bed, which is a twist on the traditional sleigh style, with mid-century modern nightstands and a rug that has blue and blush tones. And since the radiator is an original detail, instead of taking it down, she used the rug as a complement to its intricate pattern. Design Tip: Windows and mirrors can make your space seem larger while helping to bounce light around the room. Libby added mirrored sliding doors to her closet to brighten up the space.

    Susie Brenner

Carve out a corner nook. The blue chair in Libby’s bedroom corner is her way of weaving color into the space. A small table and vase of greenery create a calming aesthetic. “I always loved these frames because of their peachy-brown color,” Libby says. “I took the artwork out and replaced them with paintings from an artist on Etsy to create this little vignette.”

Go for contrast.”This was a horrible, dingy and disgusting closet of a laundry room,” Libby says. This inspired her to completely revamp the area with a light and fresh feel. She added contrast to the white space with dark, large-scale floor tile and touches of wood for warmth. Similar to other parts of her home, Libby included a small vintage rug for color. Because she loves how leather looks against dark hues, she painted the sliding doors a dark gray and installed leather handles for a unique look.Design Tip: Dark tile floors can make a small room appear bigger.Get the look: Rust Timeworn Charm Area Rug, rugsusa.com; Josie Woven Baskets, ballarddesigns.com Office

Add a warm and rustic feel.Libby’s office is the smallest room in the house. She loves how her white space contrasts with the various wood textures. “I wanted to make it feel warm and serene,” Libby says. “I started the room with this rustic chair and brought in this vintage rug, which adds character and depth.”Design Tip: Keep chords hidden to make your space feel clutter-free.Get the look: Flynn Single Wall Sconce, serenaandlily.com; Yaretzi Conference Chair, wayfair.com; Monarch Modern Criss Cross Writing Desk, homesquare.com
