Learn How to Double Crochet

If you’ve landed here because you want to recreate the adorable granny square top or bag from our September 2021 issue, or because you simply want to learn one of the foundational crochet stitches, you’re in the right place.

As part of our GH Stitch Club, we’re showing beginners all the basic techniques for knitting and crocheting, including this step-by-step tutorial to help you learn how to double crochet.

The double crochet stitch is very similar to a single crochet stitch (you can find our tutorial for that here) except you wrap the yarn around your hook — a.k.a yarn over — before each stitch, forming a taller row. This gives you a different design look and it could also help you move through your project faster once you’ve mastered how to do it (depending on what you’re creating, of course).

How to Double Crochet

Step 1: Once you’ve created your foundation chain, decide how many to “skip” over to begin your double crochet (for the Granny Squares, we skipped three).

Step 2: Then, you’ll yarn over and insert your hook into the next stitch space (for the Granny Squares, that would be the fourth).

Step 3: Yarn over and pull through (you should now have three loops on your hook).

Step 4: Yarn over once again and pull through only two loops on your hook.

Step 5: Yarn over again and pull through the final two loops.
