Malene Barnett's New Wallpaper Collection Is the Inspiration You Need to Experiment with Pattern

If there’s one person who is best described as a multi-hyphenate, it’s Malene Barnett. The founder of the Black Artists + Designers Guild, which amplifies the work and voices of Black creatives, has added yet another accomplishment to her already impressive resume. Barnett has teamed up with ” data-vars-ga-product-id=”c3e885e5-51bd-429a-a34e-6c331659a2a5″ data-vars-ga-product-price=”0.00″ data-vars-ga-product-sem3-brand=”” data-vars-ga-product-sem3-category data-vars-ga-product-sem3-id data-affiliate=”true”>Lulu & Georgia to launch a special collection of colorful and texture-rich wallcoverings — all inspired by her ceramics. The release features five wallcovering styles, ranging from $168 to $178 per roll, that are available to shop on luluandgeorgia.com.

Like her striking works of art that so thoughtfully shed light on the African diaspora, this collection — called Kindred — is all about “celebrating Black culture, joy and legacies together.” It’s also designed to encourage consumers to experiment with patterns and different textures in their home. “It’s an opportunity to try something new based on various comfort levels,” Barnett tells Good Housekeeping. “You already know what a space feels like without patterned walls, so why not try something else? Just go for it!”

But the Kindred wallcovering collection has a deeper meaning as well: “My experience working with textiles and ceramics has always been multidimensional. I never look at fabric as a flat surface, and I always bring three-dimensional elements to enhance the details. And it’s the same philosophy I use when designing wallpaper or even working with clay. In addition, I wanted the wallcoverings to be tactile, so when you come close to the surface, you feel connected—not just to the patterns but also to the materials.”
