    Promotion: designers and creatives have the opportunity to showcase their style and earn supplemental income by listing a spare room on rental website Airbnb.

    Airbnb is inviting designers and hobbyists to consider hosting their creative spaces on Airbnb and start earning via a dedicated programme that includes details on how to have their spare room professionally photographed if chosen.

    Airbnb says that listing a spare room is not only a great way to earn, but also an opportunity for designers to share their style with guests from around the world, in turn “inspiring their own creative journey”.
    The website is calling for “creative people with creative spaces” to list their spare roomsAn example of creative space on Airbnb is a private suite in central Paris that lies within Paris’ famous 7th Arrondissement and is within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower and other major attractions.

    The suite is painted colourful and bold colourways and features authentic Turkish rugs and abstract art painted by its hosts.

The loft was designed by its hosts who run an architectural studio from their home.
    The loft has clean and white decor, which is designed as a relaxing space for visitors, while a desk is also provided to offer a dedicated workspace for those who may be working remotely.
    The Sandton Cul-De-Sac in South Africa has an eclectic interiorA shared, double-height living area offers more of a glimpse of the site’s architectural elements, including the irregularly plastered walls that are covered in family photos.
    “As architects, we are well-trained to maximise space, light, health and privacy, those fundamental elements to providing the best living conditions,” said the hosts.
    “Our experience as Airbnb hosts for the last seven years has introduced us to a wide variety of people from all over the world who have consistently understood the social contract between host and guest as not a corporate relationship but a new more intimate social form, not quite family but not random strangers either.”

    Kooo Architects creates Shanghai Freitag store in 1970s textile factory

    Japanese studio Kooo Architects has converted a 1970s textile factory in Shanghai into a store that aims to capture the ethos of messenger bag manufacturer Freitag.

    Located on an alley in the Xian-Suo district in central Shanghai, the store was designed to retain elements of the former state-run factory while incorporating reused material.
    Kooo Architects aimed to create a pared-back aesthetic utilising few finishes to reduce the fit-out’s carbon impact. Like its previous Kyoto store, the look was partly informed by Freitag’s Zurich warehouse.
    Freitag has opened a store in Shanghai”In order to reduce CO2 emission as much as possible, the building interior does not use any decorational material, and all surfaces and conduits are exposed,” Kooo Architects told Dezeen.
    “In order to achieve a connected, inclusive and transparent environment, nothing is hidden, and there are no interior partition walls either,” it said.

    “Even the storage space is positioned in front of the visitors across all three floors. These spatial characters are highly relevant to the factory spirit of Freitag, and the space is a natural reflection of that.”
    It has a pared-back aesthetic enlivened with pops of yellowWithin the three-storey store, the upper floors contain display areas featuring industrial-looking units and storage spaces, while a large repair shop occupies the entire ground floor.
    The raw atheistic was broken by pops of bright yellow – one of the brand’s signature colours, which was used for the feature stair as well as ladders and a gantry.
    “In order to create an interior space fit for retail purposes, we adopted the white colour for the walls and ceiling and introduced a new skylight above the void space,” said Kooo Architects.

    Freitag store in Kyoto is designed to resemble the brand’s own warehouse

    “Traffic yellow was used for elements related to vertical movement, including staircases, the cargo lift and the ladder,” it continued.
    “The bright factory color not only introduces some playfulness to the architecture but also simply reminds visitors and staff of safety when using these elements.”
    The ground floor was opened up to the alleyTo create the store, the studio opened up the ground and part of the first floor by removing the walls, which are supported on a steel structure.
    While the studio retained many of the bricks, the rest of the waste was ground up to make “rebirth bricks”, which were used for the ground floor paving.
    The store was overclad in steel, which was also used as the hoarding required to enclose the building during the demolition phase of the works.
    The construction hoarding was reused as cladding”We saw the material similarity between the hoarding and our designed deck plate facade, so we decided to use the deck plate as the hoarding material,” said Kooo Architects.
    “In later stages of construction, the deck plate was removed from the hoarding, trimmed to size and reinstalled as a permanent facade material,” it continued.
    “The steel deck plate was galvanised to protect the building against the weather and with a matte finish to avoid harsh reflection of sunlight.”
    A repair shop occupies the entire ground floorThroughout, the design studio and Freitag aimed to reduce carbon emissions by reusing materials and sourcing new materials from within a 100 kilometre radius of the store.
    In total, Freitag and the architects estimated that the measures they undertook reduced its carbon impact by 144 tonnes of CO2 equivalent compared to a standard redevelopment.
    Founded in 1993, Swiss brand Freitag started by creating bags from reused tarpaulins. It recently opened a “micro-factory” where customers could help make their own bags out of recycled tarpaulins.

    Locally-grown wood was used by Swedish architecture studio Wingårdhs to create five suites for the Trakt Forest Hotel.
    The cabins are accessed via long ramps and large windows provide residents with elevated views of the forest.
    To preserve the surrounding environment, the studio raised the cabins on metal stilts.

    Timber covers this forest house, a holiday let in East Sussex designed by Michael Kendrick Architects. Made without felling any existing trees, the home sits on a sloping site.
    Located within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the studio was tasked with creating a lodge that is eco-friendly and respects its surroundings.

    Hitherhouse, Canada, by Ménard Dworkind
    Architecture studio Ménard Dworkind designed a holiday home with a matching sauna on a forested hillside in Quebec, Canada.
    The studio used white cedar to clad the exterior and red pine planks, that have been oiled white, for the interior. Polished concrete covers the floors of the home.
    Ménard Dworkind created shutters that slide open to allow light in and enable views of the surrounding Mont-Tremblant valley.

    Minimod Curucaca, Brazil, by MAPA
    Minimod Curucaca, designed by Brazil and Uruguay-based firm MAPA, can be found in a forest clearing in the Curaca Valley, located in a mountainous region of Southern Brazil.
    Blackened wood and a grassy roof were incorporated by the studio to seamlessly blend the project with its environment. Elevated on stilts, timber boards were used on the floors, walls and ceiling of the interior.

    Glass, concrete and wooden-log cladding were used by Aguilo + Pedraza Arquitectos to design this elevated house in Chile.

    Weathered steel wraps the exterior of this vacation home located in a concealed woodland area in Canada.
    To fit its landscape, the studio chose mahogany for the interiors of the forest house. It added full-height windows to provide panoramic views.

    Little House, USA, by MW Works
    Little House is a small cabin located in a Washington forest made from weathered cedar and blackened cement. Seattle-based studio MW Works aimed to design a home that was easy to construct and efficient.
    The bottom floor of the two-floor residence contains a mudroom, a kitchen and an open-plan living and dining area. Upstairs, the studio added two bedrooms and a shared bathroom.

    Rural Montana cabin, USA, by Andersson-Wise
    Six steel columns carry this single-storey cabin by Texas firm Andersson-Wise. Due to it being designed without a heating or cooling system, it can only be used temporarily and at certain times of the year.
    The cabin’s cladding and structure are made entirely of wood.

    The Corbett Residence is constructed of glass and darkened wood. Located along a country road, designers In Situ Studio split the home into three sections.

    SSdH tucks Melbourne warehouse apartment into former chocolate factory

    Local studio SSdH has designed a split-level, mezzanine-style apartment characterised by eclectic furniture, which is housed within an old chocolate factory in Melbourne.

    Kerr is a warehouse apartment in Melbourne’s Fitzroy suburb, located in a building that was once home to the historic MacRoberton’s Chocolate Factory before being converted into residential units in the late 1990s.
    Kerr is one of a number of apartments arranged around a central atriumAdapted into “apartment shells” arranged around a striking central atrium, the units were first designed with only basic amenities to allow occupants to determine their own interior designs.
    SSdH recently renovated Kerr, one of these units, as a three-bedroom, two-bathroom dwelling that intends to expose but also refresh the building’s original architecture.
    “The design pays homage to history while being decidedly contemporary,” studio director Jean-Marie Spencer told Dezeen.

    The home is divided by a white-painted staircaseThe mezzanine-style apartment is split across two levels by a staircase with a white-painted gridded steel mesh balustrade. Doubling as a lightwell, the staircase is illuminated by the apartment’s original single factory window.
    Upstairs, the open-plan living space includes a kitchen fitted with geometric cabinetry made from local spotted gum timber, as well as brushed stainless steel and nickel fixtures.
    Spotted gum timber and stainless steel define the kitchenThe similarly minimalist lounge area is delineated by smooth sliding doors made of the same spotted gum, which are offset by existing structural beams and columns painted in bright white.
    A sage-green two-seater armchair is positioned next to a chunky column floor lamp by emerging designer Annie Paxton and a distinctive coral-blue vase.
    A two-seater armchair features in the lounge area”Old wall and ceiling linings, trims and details are stripped back to expose original materials and structural framing,” explained Spencer.
    “An application of white unifies what was, subsequently giving the ‘new’ its own platform through contrast,” she added.
    SSdH also included timber accents downstairsTwo bedrooms and a bathroom are contained downstairs, while a bedroom and an en-suite feature on the upper level.
    All three bedrooms are defined by the same pared-back white and wooden elements as the communal areas. Inside one of them, a mushroom-like floor lamp made from lumps of blue sculpting plaster adds a playful touch.
    Among the eclectic furniture is a mushroom-like lampGleaming geometric tiles in shades of blue and yellow feature in each of the bathrooms, which also have bulbous sconce lights.
    Timber operable doors and translucent curtains leading to the sleeping areas were designed to balance the airy openness of the living spaces, according to Spencer.
    One bathroom is clad in bright blue tiles”Living areas, where privacy is less of a concern, invoke a spilling out to the street to make the most of the light and air,” said the studio director.
    Other sculptural accents inserted throughout the apartment include boxy aluminium corner stools under the stairs and a fluted side table crafted from a solid piece of timber.

    Ten industrial yet inviting homes in converted warehouses

    SSdH added double glazing to Kerr’s existing large factory window to provide both thermal and acoustic benefits to the apartment, which is located in close proximity to a busy street.
    “This glazing, along with the thermal mass embodied within the heavy masonry building allowed the apartment to remain un-airconditioned, relying on passive cross ventilation from the shared building lobby to maintain temperatures and reduce energy consumption,” said Spencer.

    Office Alex Nicholls creates multi-generational Melbourne apartment with its own spa

    Architecture studio Office Alex Nicholls has fused two penthouse apartments in Melbourne into one large flexible home, converting their basement parking spots into a private spa and pool.

    Adaptability was key to the home in Melbourne’s Elsternwick suburb, which needed to provide enough space for a multi-generational family as well as accommodating visiting relatives in guest rooms that double up as studies.
    Office Alex Nicholls fused two apartments to create Elsternwick Penthouse”Spaces were designed to adapt to a multitude of uses, with flexible working and living spaces as well as areas that could expand for large groups or contract to provide intimate settings,” the studio’s founder Alex Nicholls told Dezeen.
    Office Alex Nicholls was brought on board while the apartment block was still under construction and was able to make significant changes to suit his clients’ needs – improving the layout, adding skylights and up-speccing on key details like the windows.
    Timber staircases lead to the roof garden”The design intent was to create variety and different spatial experiences across a very expansive and potentially monotonous floorplan,” Nicholls said.

    “I wanted to create a light yet grounded and natural-feeling space that was contrasted with some stronger formal elements such as sculptural skylights and coloured functional volumes.”
    A “library spine” runs through the apartment to provide storageTo navigate this vast apartment, Nicholls devised a central “library spine” – a corridor running the entire length of the apartment that houses the family’s collection of books, art and artefacts while creating an opportunity out of what could have been a dark and monotonous space.
    “The idea for the library spine was born from a storage requirement of the clients,” the architect said. “However, it became a key architectural intervention.”
    “From a practical standpoint, it allowed everything to be easily accessible and displayed but it also helps to draw people through the apartment and celebrate the two staircases to the roof garden at either end.”
    Oculus skylights funnel sunlight into the interiorTo provide vital light to the heart of the apartment and enhance the two main living spaces, Nicholls designed a series of circular and semi-circular oculus skylights, which reference the clients’ love of Elsternwick’s art deco architecture.
    “They create a sense of movement and symmetry in the composition of otherwise rectilinear volumes,” he explained.

    Frederick Tang Architecture transforms New York loft into light-filled wellness studio

    The apartment has three kitchens, partly to meet the family’s religious requirements and partly to allow the different generations who are sharing the apartment to enjoy their own independence.
    Described by Nicholls as a series of “magic boxes”, each monolithic kitchen is defined by one vivid colour. This helps to delineate spaces and provides a counterpoint to the otherwise warm and natural material palette, which includes Blackbutt timber and Gosford sandstone.
    The apartment has three colourful kitchen units”The kitchens were designed to be largely concealed within these coloured volumes to give each one more spatial presence while ensuring the apartment did not feel too kitchen- and appliance-heavy as a result of the clients’ complex requirements,” Nicholls said.
    In the basement, Nicholls turned the penthouses’ lift-accessed parking spots into a private 100-square-metre wellness space that features a fitness pool, sauna, kitchenette, changing rooms and a flexible rehabilitation area.
    Nicholls also converted the apartments’ parking spots into a private spaTo make up for the lack of natural light in this subterranean space, Nicholls deployed atmospheric indirect lighting and a warm colour palette.
    “Lighting the space via a datum of timber niches helped give the spa a restorative atmosphere, enhanced by the use of natural materials such as sandstone, timber, terracotta and lime render,” he explained.
    The spa is home to a timber saunaElsternwick is a thriving suburb in the southeast of Melbourne, brimming with buzzy shops, restaurants and bars.
    Among them is the Hunter & Co Deli, whose interiors were informed by the cold cuts on offer, and the minimal Penta cafe with its monolithic concrete counter.

    Glossier Boston store features pastel green mouldings

    Decorative architectural mouldings are recreated in pastel green to frame openings at the Boston store for the cosmetics brand Glossier.

    Designed by the company’s in-house team, the permanent Glossier Boston location on the city’s bustling Newbury Street follows a pop-up at the Seaport in 2019.
    Mirrors positioned to face one another create infinite reflections at the Glossier Boston storeFor the space, the designers took influences from historic local architecture and Boston’s status as a college student hub, with Harvard University and MIT located just over the Charles River in Cambridge.
    “With our 10th Glossier location, we wanted to bring something special to the city that honors its metropolitan and scholastic personality,” said the team. “Our influences for Glossier Boston’s design include collegiate fashion and the decorative characteristics of Boston’s local architecture.”
    The brand’s signature pink hue covers the wallsThey also cited the “blush pink stucco, verdant green stone and verdant plant life” of the nearby Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, which is modelled on a Venetian palazzo, as a source of inspiration for the store interior.

    Glossier’s signature Millennial pink shade covers the walls, while cased openings are framed with stylised versions of architectural mouldings found on neighbouring buildings.
    Products are displayed on wavy traysMirrors are positioned to face one another in order to create infinite reflections of customers testing makeup and skincare products.
    The merchandise is displayed on the wavy trays, cylindrical displays and rectangular tables found in many of Glossier’s stores.
    The store is Glossier’s 10th permanent retail locationPale wood floors contribute to the soft colour palette, while bright lighting is designed to be flattering.
    On the exterior, the tall windows and brass doors are surrounded by marble panels and bronze detailing.

    Glossier’s Los Angeles store takes cues from Hollywood studios

    These details contrast the pale hues inside.
    “There is also a large step-back from the curbside, filled with lush trees that invite visitors to connect and hang out,” the team said.
    Stylised versions of historic architectural mouldings frame cased openingsWhen Glossier launched in 2014, it became known for its pop-up stores that opened across the US.
    The temporary spot that the company installed in Seattle, which was filled with plant-covered mounds, was named small retail interior of the year at the 2020 Dezeen Awards.
    The store’s marble and bronze exterior contrasts the interior colour schemeThe brand has since opened permanent locations in cities including Seattle, Los Angeles and London.
    All of these share a similar aesthetic and colour scheme, with subtle differences that nod to the specific location and context.

    British studio Moxon Architects renovated a Victorian townhouse in north London’s Islington area by adding a sunken garden and minimalist interiors.
    Throughout the home, subtle reminders of its early 19th-century history were inserted into the design. These include a floral gridded feature wall in the primary bedroom.

    Ibiza's first hotel gets bohemian refresh from Dorothée Meilichzon

    The 1930s Montesol hotel in Ibiza has reopened following a full overhaul of its 30 bedrooms and three suites by Dorothée Meilichzon of French interior design studio Chzon.

    Set in the old town of Eivissa, the newly renamed Montesol Experimental has been undergoing a multi-stage renovation since 2021, when it was bought by the Experimental hospitality group.

Her aim was to infuse “a bohemian overtone throughout the interior”, drawing on the hotel’s rich history.
    Built nearly a century ago in 1933, the neo-colonial Montesol is widely considered Ibiza’s first hotel, and between the 50s and 80s was known for hosting a roster of hippies, celebrities and royals including the members of rock band Pink Floyd and legendary director and actor Orson Welles.
    The rooms are brightened up by Diego Faivre’s Playdough StoolsMeilichzon was keen to tap into this bohemian past, layering up an array of fabrics, patterns, fringes and pompoms, used against light woods and textured plaster walls.

    “The hotel is a pool of colour to reflect the joy and open-mindedness of Ibiza,” she told Dezeen.
    Shell-patterned walls feature throughout the interiorsWarm yellow hues nod to the building’s iconic yellow-and-white exterior, juxtaposed with a variety of green and blue tones that bring in the colours of the Mediterranean sea.
    “Solar colours have been adopted in common areas and lunar colours in rooms,” she said. “Listening to Ayurvedic principles, we used cooling, calming colours inside the hotel to counterbalance the heat outside.”
    Moroccan zellige tiles were used to frame the mini bars in the guest roomsTiling, too, brings a cooling element, used in both the rooms and the public spaces.
    “Tiles are an important feature in this hotel,” Meilichzon explained. “And we have used traditional zelliges to wrap the niches of the mini-bars in a palette of orange, brown and off-white.”

    A hand-made theme threads through the building, as seen in the many shell-patterned walls that were created by pressing individual seashells into fresh lime plaster.
    Arched forms – from room openings to bathroom mirrors to statement headboard – reference the grandeur of the hotel’s exterior but in a more relaxed and low-key way.

    “I enjoyed shaping a lot of curvy, wavy lines around the hotel to add softness to the design,” Meilichzon said. “Nothing is sharp in Ibiza, it is a very smooth atmosphere.”
    The same rounded forms are repeated in the tables and chairsThe circle idea is continued through the use of celestial motifs, with brass suns and iron moons scattered across the hotel calling to mind the sunny days and celebrated nightlife of the island as well as its more spiritual side.
    The bedrooms have a playful feel, with chunky Playdough Stools by Diego Faivre, hand-made masks by Mallorcan artist Anna-Alexandra and wardrobe doors informed by jigsaw puzzles.
    “These unique and whimsical pieces bring a lot of character to the rooms,” Meilichzon said.
    Meilichzon previously completed the hotel’s Sabbaba restaurantSince founding her hospitality design studio Chzon in 2009, the designer has created a number of interiors for Experimental Group including outposts in London and Menorca alongside the Hotel Il Palazzo Experimental in Venice.
    More recently, Meilichzon was also responsible for overhauling a departure lounge at Charles de Gaulle Airport, incorporating her hallmark arches alongside fountains referencing iconic Parisian monuments.
