    Eight interiors that use lattice screens as walls and room dividers

    For our latest lookbook, we have selected eight interiors that use lattice screens to conceal and divide spaces without blocking sightlines.

    Lattice screens can come in a variety of materials and provide a versatile alternative to solid walls and room dividers, offering a way to create privacy between two spaces while still maintaining a connection between them.
    From concealing bathrooms to establishing connections between interior and exterior spaces, this lookbook presents eight different ways in which lattice screens have been used in residential, hotel and restaurant interiors.

    Brazilian architecture studio NJ+ took cues from Bahia, the Brazilian state that studio founder Nildo José grew up in, to create the interior of Dendê Duratex House. Here, it integrated a white latticework structure that separates the living space from the bedroom.
    The volume encompasses the one-bedroom apartment’s bathroom and kitchen amenities while introducing texture to the monochrome minimalist home.

    The second floor of this apartment in Tel Aviv was transformed into a mezzanine that overlooks a double-height living and dining room by local practice Pitsou Kedem.
    A black metal guardrail wraps the upper level, tracing the route from the staircase to the upper floor and offering security while allowing views of the floor below. The see-through lattice design features triangular shapes compiled into rectangular modules.

    This five-storey flagship store, designed for Korean skincare brand Sulwhasoo, is characterised by large expanses of brass rods that form a lattice network. Used throughout the store, the latticed walls form see-through room dividers as well as shelving.
    The framework continues from the exterior into the interior of the store, guiding visitors through the five floors. Architecture studio Neri&Hu’s concept was informed by lanterns and their role in illuminating journeys in Asian culture.

    Timber screens and red metal webbed structures conceal and divide spaces within this Japanese restaurant in Kyiv, designed by Ukrainian architecture and design studio YODEZEEN.
    The wooden lattice screens were introduced to soften the restaurant’s cold material palette, consisting of raw concrete and brick surfaces.

    Thin latticed timber screens shield this hotel’s interiors from harsh sunlight and cast intricate shadows throughout the day.
    The screens aim to serve as a mediator between hotel guests and passerbys, fostering interaction between residents of the La Condesa neighbourhood in which its is located and the hotel itself, while maintaining a level of privacy.

    Sliding lattice screens separate the reception from the bar in this hotel in Sydney, which was renovated by Australian studio Luchetti Krelle.
    The partitions allow the two distinct spaces to blend together without losing their individual character, which is defined by contrasting material and colour palettes.

    London studio Pirajean Lees was informed by Japan’s jazz age, combining a variety of materials and textures such as beaded curtains, stained-glass windows and sliding gridded screens in this restaurant in Dubai.
    The flexibility of the moveable lattice screens allows the restaurant to host events of varying crowd sizes, partitioning the open-plan layout into a variety of smaller spaces.

    A combination of solid and hollow oakwood components forms a gridded screen that allows visitors to glimpse between the dining area and the entrance of this restaurant in Tel Aviv.
    Alongside oakwood, the restaurant’s interior features granite slabs and concrete. Designers Pitsou Kedem Architects aimed for the raw material palette to reflect the restaurant’s use of fresh ingredients.

    Diseño Norteño completes concrete apartments with lattices in Tijuana

    Mexican studio Diseño Norteño has created a multi-storey residential building that features an earthy colour palette and frontal lattices that provide privacy.

    The project, called CLNS 12401, is located in Tijuana, a city located along Mexico’s border with the United States.
    CLNS 12401 is located in TijuanaThe building was constructed in a transitioning area, historically dominated by single-family homes, and it sits across from an abandoned park that is slowly returning to use.
    The building backs up to a steep slope, which led local firm Diseño Norteño to conceive the project sectionally, with the spaces becoming larger as the building reaches the higher floors.

    “This building’s design allows higher density while maintaining a friendly, urban scale for the surrounding context,” it added.
    The staircase acts as a courtyardThe design comprises two blocks of habitations with an open stairwell between them. The staircase acts as a courtyard that helps promote neighbourly encounters.
    The architecture studio noted that the stairwell acts a pergola, regulating the amount of sun entering the public spaces and walkways.
    Concrete defines the apartment’s interiorThe building’s two bottom levels have concrete bearing walls, while the upper portion is made of concrete block.
    Facades are painted in hues of sage green and creamy white. Terraces are lined with metal lattices that provides privacy and a sense of safety.

    The first level’s units are 700 square feet (65 square metres), while the second and third levels are 1,00 and 900 square feet, respectively (93 and 84 square metres).
    “As the structure rises, the topography enables bigger units,” the architects noted.

    In each unit, social spaces face the street and the park, while bedrooms are in the rear, next to the hillside. The uppermost unit has a spacious terrace that enables the public zone to flow outdoors.
    The architects said that simple materials, such as concrete and metal, helped keep costs down, which enabled the building to be accessible to younger residents in Tijuana.

    Other projects in Tijuana include a house by Gracia Studio that has an exterior made of concrete and weathering steel, and a purple bridge by Legorreta that is meant to make crossing the Mexico-US border much quicker.

    Pitsou Kedem covers Hiba restaurant in Tel Aviv with geometric timber latticework

    Gridded oakwood panels sit alongside rough slabs of granite inside Hiba, a restaurant in Tel Aviv designed by local architecture practice Pitsou Kedem.

    Located in the city’s midtown area, Hiba serves a menu of Arab-Israeli fusion food.
    The restaurant’s use of fresh local ingredients influenced Pitsou Kedem to curate an equally raw, natural material palette for its interior.
    A gridded oak partition runs along Hiba’s entrance corridorGuests are guided into the venue via a narrow corridor with a gridded oak divider on one side.
    Some of the partition’s rectangular slots are blocked off while others are left open, allowing visitors to get brief glimpses of the hubbub happening in the restaurant proper.

    Hiba’s facade and ceiling feature the same latticework, loosely informed by the mashrabiya window screens that are traditional to Islamic architecture.
    The restaurant can seat up to 40 guestsThe corridor opens up into an intimate dining room, which accommodates just 40 guests.
    Dotted throughout are a series of circular oak tables, each accompanied by curved-back oak chairs with woven seats.

    Concrete was also applied to the restaurant’s floor, where it was polished to reveal the aggregate within.

    At the back of the room, the practice created what it describes as an “inverted bar”, where liquor bottles are displayed inside a backlit niche in the wall rather than a typical bar counter that projects out into the room.
    Drinks can be prepared here or on the chunky slab of granite that forms a counter at the centre of the room.
    Diners can also sit on a curved concrete benchAnother craggy block of granite forms the base of an oak-topped dining counter that extends directly into Hiba’s kitchen in the corner of the restaurant.
    The kitchen was intentionally left open so that diners can watch the chefs at work and get an insight into the culinary process.
    A niche in the restaurant’s rear wall doubles up as a drinks barPitsou Kedem was founded by Israeli architect Pitsou Kedem in 2000.
    Hiba joins a number of trendy eateries across Tel Aviv including the minimalist vegan restaurant Opa and Bana – a cafe where fresh fruit and produce are arranged into colourful eye-catching displays.
